2024 Affirmative Action Series

Updated: Jan 15

AAAYA is excited to kick off 2024 with an informative series on Affirmative Action.  The June 2023 Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina has had a profound impact on Yale’s admissions and to the Asian American community and we are looking forward to exploring this topic with a lineup of expert speakers.

Since our inception, AAAYA has always stood for inclusivity and equity in all its forms. When the

Students for Fair Admissions first brought their case several years ago, AAAYA firmly stood by our core principles and we were outspoken about our support for a whole-person admissions review.

However, we understood that this court case and affirmative action was and is a contentious and polarizing topic in the larger AAPI community, which is why as an organization, we made a conscious decision not to engage in this topic with programming until a ruling was made.

Now, as we contend with and navigate the impacts of the ruling on admissions nationwide, the AAAYA Board felt it important to provide programming to deliver thoughtful and insightful exploration of the ruling’s impact. Our intention with these planned virtual events is to provide informative and unbiased discussions that addresses community concerns about the SCOTUS ruling and affirmative action in the spirit of community and lifelong learning that guides our organization.

We have four virtual events planned in this series.

Our first event begins with a moderated discussion with Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, Jeremiah Quinlan (YC’03) on Thursday January 11, 2023. Former Alumni Schools Committee Director for Silicon Valley, Gaurav Khanna (YC ’94) and I will moderate the discussion.

This will be followed by a series of conversations with experts on college admissions:

  • Thursday, February 8 @4pm PST/ 7pm EST: Former Yale Admissions Officer James Kim (YC'11) will share an insider’s view of the admissions process and their perspectives on what the SCOTUS will mean for admissions. RSVP

  • Saturday, February 17 @12pm PST/3pm EST Professional college admissions consultant, who will speak to the impact of the SCOTUS rulings on applicants, and their experiences guiding AAPI students through the application process. RSVP

  • Asian American Studies scholar to provide more in-depth analysis and historical context of this landmark ruling.

We are finalizing the dates and times for these events and we will share event details soon.

We hope you’ll join us in these discussions, and we invite you to submit questions for speakers in advance to info@aaaya.org
