“Ping Pong Playa” Special Screening with Co-Writer/Director Jessica Yu, ’87

The special screening of “Ping Pong Playa” in San Francisco, with appearances by co-writer/director Jessica Yu ’87, star Jimmy Tsai and producer Joan Huang, was a big success. Many Yalies from around the Bay Area were part of the sizeable crowd for the Saturday afternoon show. Thanks to Jessica Yu for contributing proceeds from the AAAYA benefit tickets to the Tina E. Yeh Fellowship fund and Wei-Tai Kwok ’85 for all his work organizing the event.

The film is hilarious, poking fun at just about everyone you’ve ever met in the AA and non-AA communities, Chinese school, living at home, those annoying little motorized scooters, Asian parents comparing “success” of their kids, etc. The ping pong playing kids almost steal the show, and the hip-hop and more soundtrack including a number of AA rappers rocks. Jessica and crew manage to make smashing stereotypes fun.
