This event is the ninth in a series covering different professions. The concept is to have a diverse panel of doctors at different stages in their careers and in different areas of medicine, all of whom will provide candid views of their profession.
The panel discussion will be conducted simultaneously in New York City and at Yale, with the panelists and the moderator in New York. The two meeting rooms will be connected via video conference and the audience will be at both locations. Yale students and alumni are welcome to attend at either location. In addition, the panel discussion will be broadcast over the internet as a streaming video for those who cannot attend in person.
Time: Tuesday, October 29, 2013 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm EST (The panelists have agreed to stay for an additional 30 minutes from 5:30 pm to 6 pm to answer additional questions.)

Biographies:
Stephen E. Dolgin, M.D. graduated from Yale College in 1971, a philosophy major. He took the prerequisites for medical school during the next 2 years and graduated from NYU School of Medicine in 1977. He did the general surgery residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now the Brigham and Women’s) at Harvard University and then the pediatric surgical residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago (Northwestern University). From 1984 until 2005 he was the chief of pediatric surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC where he rose to Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics. He taught embryology to first year medical students for a decade and directed the third year clinical clerkship in surgery.
He became the chief of pediatric surgery in the North Shore –LIJ Health System in 2005 and served in that position until 2011. He is currently Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the newly established Hofstra NS-LIJ School of Medicine and a pediatric surgeon at Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York.
He is a practicing academic pediatric surgeon who has written about many clinical pediatric surgical issues and has edited the recently published textbook: Surgical Care of Major Malformations in the Newborn (World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd. 2012). He serves on the editorial board of Pediatrics in Review and The Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports. He has received numerous awards for teaching and professionalism.
Nathan G. Kase, M.D. is currently a professor at the Mount Sinai Medical School. He has had a long and distinguished career as the Dean of Mount Sinai School of Medicine and as a leading expert in his area of medical specialization, Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences. Dr. Nathan Kase graduated with his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and received his entire residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Sinai.
Upon the completion of his residency, Dr. Kase left Mount Sinai for the Yale University School of Medicine where during a period of almost two decades he rose from instructor to professor and chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in which capacity he served for ten years. He returned to Mount Sinai in 1981 as professor and chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science. He was appointed dean of the medical school in 1985 and served as dean until 1998. He resumed his active role as professor until he once again returned to administrative duties, serving as Interim Dean 2001-2003 and Interim CEO 2001-2002.
Dr. Kase’s major clinical and research achievements are focused in reproductive endocrinology in which he is internationally recognized as an outstanding authority.
Esther Knapp, M.D. is currently a fellow in pediatric hematology/oncology at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She received her B.A. in philosophy at Yale, graduating in 2003. She attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and then received a Masters in Bioethics at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
Her residency was in pediatrics at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Subsequently she worked as a hospitalist at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. She is conducting research on lymphoma, and is also interested in medical ethics.
Jiyon Lee, M.D. graduated from Yale College in 1991 with a B.S. in Biology. She attended Yale Medical School and graduated with an M.D. in 1996. During medical school, she was a Yale Fellow from 1993 to 1994.
She did her post-graduate training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, with an internship in surgery, residency in Diagnostic Radiology, and fellowship in Women’s Imaging and Ultrasound.
Since completing her post-graduate training, Dr. Lee has been a practicing radiologist and Assistant Professor at NYU Medical School and the NYU Cancer Institute.
Peter Young (Moderator) is President and a Managing Director of Young & Partners, a leading boutique investment banking firm focused on the life science and chemical industries. He manages the firm and is actively involved in client transactions and financings. Under his leadership, Young & Partners has established and maintained its position as a highly regarded firm.
Prior to founding Young & Partners, Mr. Young was head of various related industry groups at Salomon Brothers, Schroders, and Lehman Brothers for ten years. Mr. Young has been an investment banker serving the chemical and pharma industries for twenty seven years assisting a wide variety of chemical and life science companies on a global basis with regard to mergers, acquisitions, restructurings and capital raising.
Early in his career while with Bain & Co., Mr. Young provided strategic advice to major chemical and life science companies. He was also a senior member of J.H. Whitney & Co. the venture capital firm.
Mr. Young received an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School (Baker Scholar with Highest Distinction), an M.S. in Accounting from the New York University and a B.A. in Economics from Yale University. He is a Certified Public Accountant and member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Previous panels have covered film and drama, legal, investment banking, entrepreurism, consulting, and medical. The series for 2013-14 will cover a number of new professions, including investing (private equity, venture capital and fund management), education, government and non-profit organizations and a repeat of the medical profession.
