New York Chapter-Yale Career Panel: A Candid View of Entrepreneurism, Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013

This event is the sixth in a series covering different professions and will feature three panelists (all Yale affiliated) who are either entrepreneurs or who have been heavily involved with start-ups and helping entrepreneurs. The concept is to have a diverse panel of entrepreneurs, all of whom will provide candid views of entrepreneurism.

The panel discussion will be held at Yale, but will be simultaneously broadcast via video conference to a meeting room in New York City, and over the internet as a streaming video webinar.

Biographies:

James G. Boyle

Jim Boyle is a co-founder and the Director of the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute (YEI), a business/educational unit within YaleUniversity with the mission of mentoring students with new venture ideas. Prior to forming YEI, he was previously responsible within the Office of Cooperative Research (OCR) for the licensing and venture startup of a number of engineering-based technologies. Before joining OCR, he developed and actively managed the University’s largest corporate research alliance, managing a large array of both Yale and external scientists in bioimaging-based collaborations. Earlier, Mr. Boyle co-founded and grew a predictive analytics consulting practice, providing both technical and pricing guidance on new product development to a wide array of Fortune 1000 companies in the scientific equipment industry.

Mr. Boyle began his entrepreneurial career while still a Yale graduate student, developing novel instruments for characterizing trace biomolecules with the support of the National Institutes of Health, and later commercializing these devices through a wide array of OEM partnerships as part of a Yale startup.

Mr. Boyle has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (Manhattan College), an M .S. in Mechanical Engineering (University of Illinois), and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Yale University).

Michael Inwald

Michael Inwald is the Founder and President of Cheeseboy: Grilled Cheese To Go, America’s first quick-service grilled cheese franchise concept.  The company was launched during his tenure as an MBA candidate at the Yale School of Management in 2009.  After receiving funding for his venture, Mr. Inwald opened the first location in Milford, CT and has since grown Cheeseboy into a regional quick-service chain across the Northeast.

Prior to starting graduate school, Mr. Inwald was an Account Supervisor at Ogilvy & Mather and managed new business development for Ogilvy’s healthcare division. Before joining Ogilvy, he managed multiple interactive accounts at CoActive Marketing and served as Director of Marketing for Steve & Barry’s, a national apparel retail chain with over 130 stores across the country at the time.  Previously, Mr. Inwald owned and operated Business World Review, a media company that specialized in video/multimedia production, business news distribution, and web video streaming.

Mr. Inwald graduated from CornellUniversity in 2003, receiving his B.A. in Liberal Arts with concentrations in Biology and Film Production.

Christopher K. McLeod

Throughout his career, Christopher McLeod has demonstrated expertise in growing companies through strategic collaborations, innovative marketing, and new product development.  Currently, Mr. McLeod is nurturing new ventures as an investor and advisor. He is a corporate director of three early stage life science companies, including AxioMx, Inc., where he is President and CEO.

Mr. McLeod served as President and Chief Executive Officer of 454 Life Sciences from February 2005 through September 2011, where he led the development, manufacturing and marketing of the company’s innovative DNA sequencing products, which are used in research laboratories worldwide. 454 Life Sciences was acquired by Roche Diagnostics in 2007. Previously, Mr. McLeod was Executive Vice President of CuraGen Corporation from November 1999, responsible for bioinformatics, strategic business development, and collaborative research, including the establishment of strategic partnerships with Abgenix, Bayer, Seattle Genetics and TopoTarget A/S.

Prior to joining CuraGen, Mr. McLeod was Chief Executive Officer of Havas Interactive (formerly Cendant Software), a leading international software developer with such leading brands as Blizzard, Serra, and Knowledge Adventure, whose annual revenues increased in excess of 60 percent to over $500 million during his two year tenure.  Previously, Mr. McLeod served as Executive Vice President and Director at CUC International where he was President of the CompuCard division, marketing affinity membership programs with partners including Citibank, Sears, Bank One and Chase.

Mr. McLeod earned his B.S. Magna Cum Laud with a dual major in economics and engineering and applied science from YaleUniversity and his M.S. in management from the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Peter Young (Panelist and Moderator)

Mr. Young is President and a Managing Director of Young & Partners, a leading investment banking firm focused on the life science and chemical industries. He manages the firm and is actively involved in client transactions and financings. Under his leadership, Young & Partners has established and maintained its position as a leader in the industry. Young & Partners was founded in 1996 and is lead by a group of Managing Directors, all of whom were previously heads of their industry groups at major firms such as Morgan Stanley, Lehman Brothers, Dresner Bank, Schroders, and Salomon Brothers.

Prior to 1996, Mr. Young was head of various related industry groups at Salomon Brothers, Schroders, and Lehman Brothers for ten years.  Mr. Young has been an investment banker serving the chemical and pharma industries for twenty six years assisting a wide variety of chemical and life science companies on a global basis with regard to mergers, acquisitions, restructurings and capital raising.

Early in his career while with Bain & Co., Mr. Young provided strategic advice to major chemical and life science companies. He was also a senior member of J.H. Whitney & Co. the venture capital firm.

Mr. Young received an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School (Baker Scholar with Highest Distinction), an M.S. in Accounting from the New York University and a B.A. in Economics from Yale University.  He is a Certified Public Accountant and member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified  Public Accountants.  Mr. Young is a board member of Société de Chimie Industrielle, a chemical and pharmaceutical industry association and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Pharmaceutical Executive Magazine.
