Founded by Jack Ma, Alibaba is the the largest online shopping retailer in the world, after having the largest IPO on the NYSE in history (September 2014) and is poised to overtake Walmart as the world’s largest retail network. Alibaba is now contributing to the shift of the infrastructure-based Chinese model to a consumer-based economy.
In a conversation with Quartz’s Managing Editor, Bobby Ghosh, and Asia Society’s Center on US-China Relations’ Director, Orville Schell, Duncan Clark shared his unique perspective on the rise of Alibaba. A businessman and author of the new book, Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built, Duncan Clark explored the foundations upon which Alibaba was built as well as the more personal story of Jack Ma’s childhood and how he overcame great obstacles to become one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs.
