About the Event
On May 14, 2024, AAAYA's National Board will host the annual AAAYA General Assembly. This event also kicks-off a series of programming in May for our Yale community to celebrate Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month together!
Congress created Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week in 1978, setting aside early May to coincide with two milestones in Asian/Pacific American history: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) in the United States, and Chinese workers’ role in building the transcontinental railroad, completed May 10, 1869. In 1992, Congress expanded the observance to Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.
This year's General Assembly will again be held in a virtual town hall style on Zoom.
All AAAYA members* are invited to join this meeting. There, alumni will have the opportunity to hear directly from AAAYA's executive leaders on our mission, our accomplishments, and our plans for 2024 and beyond. The session will have break-out sessions for alumns to meet and greet one another. Furthermore, as a member, you'll have the opportunity to ask questions and give feedback to the Board.
We hope you'll join us during this year's May Heritage Month in reflection and celebration of the remarkable role of the AANHPI community in our nation’s history. We hope our community is able to use this time to learn from one another and share our rich heritage together.
*AAAYA recognizes as "member" any alumnus/na of Yale, irrespective of race or ethnic heritage. An alumnus/na is defined as someone who has completed at least one semester in a degree-conferring program.
