The Year of the Hare is leaping off to a fast start with AAAYA Norcal’s first event next weekend! Saturday, February 19th
* 10am-5pm Free Family Friendly Activities & 2 pm Lion Dancing at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Visitor Center (499 Jefferson Street, San Francisco 415-447-5000 map) and adjoining Hyde Street Pier area (west end of Fisherman’s Wharf)
* 3pm Lunar New Year No-Host Dim Sum (Yank Sing Restaurant, 49 Stevenson Street, San Francisco 415-541-4949 map)
* 5:15-8pm Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade
Details for SF Maritime National Historical Park activities at its Visitor Center (499 Jefferson Street, San Francisco, CA) and adjoining Hyde Street Pier area (Chinese Lion Dance performance by Leung’s White Crane Dragon and Lion Dance Association; Grace Quan – a 43 foot replica of San Francisco Bay Chinese shrimp fishing junk; craft activities – ink block prints, paper origami; “Fish Tails and Tales” presentation of stories of Chinese American history by author Irene Dea Collier; traditional Cantonese folk music concert by vocalist Wilma Pang & Chinese Instrumental Ensemble) may be viewed at www.nps.gov/safr/parknews/chinesenewyear2011.htm.
The famous Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade – voted one of the top 10 parades in the U.S. – will have over 100 units including the 201′ Golden Dragon participating in this San Francisco tradition which started in the 1860’s. See more about the parade at: www.chineseparade.com
Notes: – Folks are welcome to join the group for just dim sum or any individual event. – San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, Yank Sing restaurant and Chinese New Year parade are accessible via public transportation. – Parking may be difficult, unless you get there very early, or park off the beaten track away from Chinatown. – Please dress comfortably as it is expected that you will be doing quite a bit of walking/standing over the course of the day. It may also get cold, so bringing an extra layer is advisable. – The parade is not recommended for very small children or pets as it will be crowded and loud.
